Alan Barrell’s career spans five decades and includes practitioner work in hospital laboratory medicine, health policy work on innovation in the National Health Service and thirty years as an executive and board chairman in international public and private companies in the Healthcare and Electronics industries. Latterly he has raised and managed an early stage venture capital fund and is an Angel investor working with a number of start-ups and growing companies in UK, China and Finland. His activities in entrepreneurial education from a Cambridge base when Entrepreneur in Residence at Judge Business School Entrepreneurship Centre, led to appointments as Visiting Professor in four Chinese Universities and to membership of the International Advisory Boards of two Universities of Applied Sciences in Finland – Laurea and Lahti. Professor Barrell was one of the first ten recipients in UK of The Queen’s Award for Enterprise Promotion and in 2011 was honoured by the President of Finland when appointed Knight First Class of the Order of the White Rose of Finland – for services to education. Alan is also active as Trustee of the Cambridge Rare Diseases Network and the Cambridge Oriental Culture Association.
